Welcome to the NRP 60 website
In Switzerland men and women are equal both technically and before the law. In everyday life, however, pay differences and the unequal distribution of family work and job opportunities between the sexes indicate that inequalities still exist.

As part of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s National Research Programme "Gender Equality" (NRP 60), 21 projects are assisting us in finding out more about the reasons for continuing discrimination in the family, in education and in professional life. And more important: after 30 years of gender equality work in Switzerland, we will for the first time in these projects gain systematic insights into the effectiveness of the strategies, programmes and measures that are supposed to contribute to gender equality in the everyday life of society, in families, in educational institutions and work organisations. The complex conditions that affect the success or failure of gender equality processes are being identified and evaluated – with the situation in other European countries also being taken into consideration.

In addition to providing extensive knowledge, the results of the programme will also offer recommendations for action on the issue of how a gender equality policy for the future must be shaped so that it can be innovative, successful and sustainable.
